Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund Awards First Grant to Lake George Association

LAKE GEORGE — The Lake George Association (LGA) received a $5,000 grant from the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund for operational costs of the LGA’s Floating Classroom.

This is the first grant awarded to the LGA from the Outdoor Fund, which aims to connect new audiences to the outdoors. American children spend three times as many hours in front of screens as they do outdoors, says the 501(c)(3) charity, which seeks to introduce a new generation to the wonders of the natural world.

The Floating Classroom is an ideal platform for that. Established in 1991, the spring-through-fall program educates approximately 1,700 students (grades 3–12) and 400 adults every year about freshwater protection.

“Every time the boat goes out with a group of school kids, it brings back a fresh generation of Lake stewards,” said Peter Menzies, LGA Board Chair and Interim Executive Director. “We are thankful for the support from organizations such as Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund who support this highly effective educational program.”

The Floating Classroom consists of a two-hour boat ride on Lake George on a 40-foot catamaran that accommodates 25 passengers. Participants run water clarity tests and learn about the geography and geological formation of Lake George, its watershed, food webs, and water clarity, chemistry, and quality issues. Students then spend two hours stream monitoring at West Brook to learn the effects of the watershed’s natural processes on the Lake.

"We are thrilled to receive this generous grant for our Floating Classroom and Stream Education program,” said Lindsey Kenna, Education for Action Manager for the LGA. “This grant helps us offer the program for free to schools within the watershed, and at a discounted rate for those outside of it."

In addition to school groups, the Floating Classroom is open to the general public every Wednesday in July and August at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Reservations are available at LGAFloatingClassroom.org.
