Director of Development 

Reports to: President

Position Description

The Director of Development works closely with the President, LGA Board Chair, and Board of Directors to create a sustainable culture of philanthropy, cultivating and stewarding donor relationships that support and advance the mission and vision of the LGA. The Director of Development is responsible for developing and achieving the organization’s advancement goals with input and guidance from the President and LGA Board Development Committee. He/she provides leadership, strategic direction, oversight, and coordination of the Development team to execute development plans and manage progress toward established goals and objectives.


Board and Organizational Leadership

  • As a member of the LGA’s senior management team, lead the accomplishment of the organization’s development objectives, reporting to the President and working closely with the Board Chair, Board of Directors, and LGA staff
  • Develop and implement an advancement plan that aligns with and supports the LGA’s mission, strategic plan, long-term financial model, and annual operating budget targets with input from the President and Development Committee
  • Create, monitor, and manage the LGA’s annual income and expense budget for targeted appeals, annual giving, online donations, direct mail campaigns, major gifts, special events, and other solicitations
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Directors’ Development and Marketing Committees to develop and advance strategies that meet fundraising and engagement goals

Major, Annual Fund, and Planned Gifts

  • Develop and implement comprehensive identification, cultivation,  and solicitation strategies for prospective and current major gift donors, focusing on individual engagement that qualifies capacity, builds rapport, and identifies philanthropic passions and interests
  • Oversee and expand the LGA’s leadership donors (LG30) and overall major gift program
  • Implement and lead prospect review and goal setting process for President, Board Chair, and Directors
  • Create and manage portfolios for President, Board Chair, other Directors, and trained advancement staff and volunteers
  • Create and introduce strategic annual fund initiatives to inspire mid-level gifts and ensure major gift pipeline development
  • Create and manage the LGA’s annual fund activities, including targeted appeals, annual giving, online donations, direct mail campaigns, major gifts, special events, and other solicitations
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with current and potential corporate and private foundation sponsors
  • Work with colleagues to coordinate grant proposal preparation including research, writing, and reporting requirements 
  • Establish formal planned giving program, with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequests, charitable gift annuities, and other legacy instruments

Stewardship and Donor Relations

  • Review current practices and develop comprehensive stewardship plan articulating donor recognition and relationship development for donors at all levels
  • Strategize, implement, and manage events and engagement opportunities for prospect and donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Manage all donor/gift recognition activities including receipting and acknowledgement letters and inclusion in all appropriate print and digital materials, events, etc.
  • Manage all gift and recognition agreements, including pledges, planned giving, and naming opportunities

Marketing, Communications, and Outreach

  • Provide input and oversight on all prospect and donor communications including creation of a long-term communications plan as it relates to retention and growth
  • Coordinate with LGA contractors on production of the annual report, as well as other donor inclusive materials in keeping with donor pledges and stewardship

Data Management

  • Oversee and manage the LGA’s donor and prospect database to ensure that all data is applied and leveraged to drive effective use of donor/prospect analytics and to facilitate ongoing campaign design and execution
  • Create fundraising performance reports with input from the President and the Development Committee for periodic presentation to the Board, senior staff, and key partners

Experience, Expertise, and Education

  • BA required, MA a plus
  • At least 10 years development experience in progressively responsible leadership positions with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role overseeing operational and performance outcomes
  • Capable of developing relationships and engaging with donors, prospects, and Board Directors
  • Strong background managing all aspects of fundraising  including high net worth individuals
  • Verified track record of meeting or exceeding measurable fundraising goals in a medium to large, fast-paced nonprofit environment
  • Significant experience creating budgets and forecasting revenue and expenses
  • Proficiency with fundraising applications using available data to perform comprehensive donor data analysis, portfolio creation, and reporting
  • Strong written and analytical skills
  • Hands-on experience with office and donor management software
  • Supervisory and/or significant project management experience
