Science of Protection

Everything the LGA Does to Protect Lake George is Guided By Science.

From individual stream sampling to unprecedented Lake-wide monitoring programs. From data-gathering computers in the cabs of local plow trucks to world-class data modeling and visual simulations at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s highly regarded Darrin Fresh Water Institute.

In the lab and on the Lake, LGA staff and our science partners are probing deeper into Lake George’s chemistry, biology and atmospheric conditions than has ever been possible before, with one crystal clear goal:

To understand, anticipate and respond to the unprecedented and escalating pressures of nutrient loading, invasive species, excessive road salt use and, of course, global climate change before our Lake’s legendary water quality is compromised beyond repair.

Leading the way in our science-to-solutions commitment to protecting Lake George are:

  • Collecting water samples

    The Lake George Waterkeeper

The mission of the Lake George Waterkeeper is to defend the natural resources of Lake George and its watershed.

  • The Jefferson Project Data Visualization Lab

    The Jefferson Project

An environmental research collaboration of the LGA, IBM Research, and RPI

  • taking a water sample

    LGA Citizen Scientists

LGA Citizen Scientists are dedicated volunteers on the front lines of Lake protection.

  • Lake Protector

    And you!

By becoming a Lake Protector now and taking direct actions at your home, your business or on the Lake, you will accelerate our progress basin-wide and ensure protection of the Lake’s water quality for generations to come.
