Lake George HABWatch Alert

July 31, 2026

On the afternoon of Thursday, July 30, scientists from The Jefferson Project observed conditions consistent with a diffuse cyanobacterial bloom in several areas across the south basin of Lake George. 

The accumulations were no longer visible at the Darrin Freshwater Institute dock early in the morning of July 31.

However, cyanobacteria can concentrate at the surface as sunlight and temperatures increase, so the LGA is asking the community to monitor the Lake on Friday, July 31, through the weekend. 

Please look for surface streaks, colonies or scum-like accumulations. If you check the Lake, submit a survey response through the LGA's HABWatch form, including a photo. 

Even if you do not observe a suspected bloom, your report is valuable to our research and lake protection efforts.

If you see a suspected bloom, avoid contact with the water and keep children and pets away from the affected area.
