This summer, the LGA signed a contract with the New York State Hemlock Initiative (NYSHI) at Cornell University to hire a seasonal technician who will help survey for and treat hemlocks infested with the invasive insect, hemlock woolly adelgid.
We would like to introduce our amazing field technician, Alana Carroll, who has been working to protect our hemlock trees this summer!
Alana grew up in Upstate NY and spent much of her time in the woods. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Integrative Biology from Harvard College in 2023, and in 2024 earned a Master's in biology from St Andrews University. During this time, Alana worked on a variety of research projects about avian cognition for the Alex Foundation and avian ecology field work in South Africa. She spent most of her summers teaching at a nature center where she discovered woolly adelgids and became very interested in the Hemlock Forest Initiative. She is thrilled to be working toward healthy forests with such an amazing crew. Alana primarily assists with surveys, data collection, and aiding treatment efforts of hemlock woolly adelgid. In her free time, she likes to craft things from natural materials, hike, bike pack, read, and do acroyoga.
Hemlock trees are an essential part of the Lake George ecosystem. Hemlocks moderate water temperature, reduce sediment and nutrient runoff and sustain the visual character of the Lake George landscape. We are very excited to have Alana protecting New York State's hemlock forests this summer in support of a clear and clean Lake George!
